Sapphire Shapes

Sapphires do come in all kinds of shape including round, oval, cushion, square, marquise and anything in-between. Shape is sometimes confused with the cut of the stone. Be sure not to make this mistake.

Cut of a Sapphire

The type of cut from one sapphire to another, even though may be the same shape, will vary a lot and can have a large impact on the overall look and sparkle of the stone. The quality of cut will play a big part in the sparkle and fire the sapphire will give off. Sapphires are often cut to hold colour although a lot or poor cut sapphires are cut simply to keep the largest carat weight possible in the stone. The best stone sapphire cutters in the world will sacrifice carat weight and remove more of the stone to give a brighter lustre and even colour dispersion. When viewing only one stone at a time it is hard to compare the differences, especially in the type of cut.

Sapphire Size

As with all precious stones, sapphires are measured by weight and this is known as the carat weight. This only refers to the weight of the sapphire and not the measurement size of the stone. Two sapphires could weigh exactly the same but one may appear to look a lot larger and/or brighter than the other stone.

Colours of Sapphires

Sapphires do come in many different colours including pink, green, yellow, orange, purple and the more common, blue sapphire. The shade and intensity of colour can change dramatically and depending on the shade and colour, the price of the sapphire will change. Cut plays a big part in how well the sapphire holds its colour.

It is extremely important to view sapphires in person to choose the one that is right for you. One characteristic of a sapphire can play a big part and effect other characteristics of the stone so be sure to compare your options.
